Structural formula and f IUPAC name of functional isomer of CH3-CH2 – O – CH3

Structural formula and IUPAC name of functional isomer of CH3-CH2 – O – CH3.

CH3-CH2 – O – CH3 is an example of mixed ether. The name of the compound is methoxy ethane or ethyl methyl ether.

There are two types of ether, namely simple ether and mixed ether. Their general formula are R – O –R and R –O –R’ respectively. The functional group of ether compound is ‘–O–‘.

The common formula of ether is Cn H2nO, which satisfy the general formula of alcohol. So the functional isomer of ether is obviously alcohol compound with functional group –OH.

Now, CH3-CH2 – O – CH3 compound contain three carbon atoms. Hence the molecular formula of the isomeric alcohol would be C3H8O and the name of the alcohol is propanol.

But, it has been found that, two isomeric alcohols are possible with the molecular formula of C3H8O.

The IUPAC names of these two isomeric alcohols are propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol. Their structural formulas are shown below.
